A little light brightens the darkness. It only takes a little.
This week as we remember that holy night, we will light candles on Christmas Eve and sing Silent Night. That sounds similar to what we do every year on Christmas Eve, but of course this year will be different. This year we will be home when we light our candles. This year our candles will be lit from our living rooms and kitchens and family rooms and dining rooms. This year the candles may look different – they may be short and white or tall and green or purple or pink. They may be votives or tealights, tapers or pillars.
It doesn’t matter what kind of candles we use. It doesn’t matter where we light them.
The glow from our candles remind us that in the midst of darkness there is light. In the darkest days of the year for us in New England and the darkest year of our lives for many of us, it just takes a little light to remind us that God chooses to come to earth in the midst of darkness.
So this week as you log in to our online worship on Zoom, dim your lights, have your candles and matches ready. Once again we will sing Silent Night and bear witness to God’s promise that “the light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it.” (John 1:5)
See you on Christmas Eve!
In Christ,
Pastor Jen
