Last week I was at Disney World. It wasn’t my first visit as an adult. I love Disney.
I’m not exactly sure why I love Disney so much – it’s too expensive and too commercialized. But more than many places I visit, I find I can truly relax there. I feel like I’m away and on vacation. I’m so immersed in the “magic,” I don’t even think to check my phone. That doesn’t happen anywhere else.
Disney has a reputation for hospitality. Perhaps the pinnacle of hospitality for me was when I wanted to fill my water bottle and I asked an employee (“cast member”) where I could find a water station. Instead of merely pointing me in the correct direction, she walked with me to the spot and then said cheerily, “Enjoy your water!”
It made me smile.
And maybe that’s why I love Disney so much. The culture is to share simple (even nerdy) gestures of hospitality that make people smile.
