Pinckney, Cynthia Marie Graham Hurd, Susie Jackson, Ethel Lee Lance, DePayne Middleton-Doctor, Tywanza Sanders, Daniel Lee Simmons, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, and Myra Thompson were murdered by a self-professed white supremacist while they were gathered for Bible study and prayer at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church (often referred to as Mother Emanuel) in Charleston, South Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are Lutheran connections. Pastors Pinckney and Simmons were both graduates of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. It is particularly painful to acknowledge that the murderer was a member \u2013 baptized and confirmed \u2013 in a Lutheran church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A colleague, Rev. Lenny Duncan, visited Mother Emanuel church a year or so ago. He posted this photo with the accompanying caption: \u201cWho would have thought a simple bible study listed out front would be the most profound witness I have seen in years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1009\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/faith-andover.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/emanuel-church-1009x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Emanuel 9, Martyrs\" class=\"wp-image-9454\" srcset=\"https:\/\/faith-andover.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/emanuel-church-1009x1024.jpg 1009w, https:\/\/faith-andover.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/emanuel-church-296x300.jpg 296w, https:\/\/faith-andover.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/emanuel-church-768x780.jpg 768w, https:\/\/faith-andover.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/emanuel-church-24x24.jpg 24w, https:\/\/faith-andover.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/emanuel-church.jpg 1262w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1009px) 100vw, 1009px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today we grieve many things. We grieve for the nine lives lost. We grieve the fact that evil showed up to Bible study. We grieve the sin of racism. We grieve that the perpetrator of such violence was a part of the Lutheran family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And also we give thanks for the courageous witness of Mother Emanuel church.
