Micah 5:2-5a<\/h2>\n


2<\/sup>\u00a0But you, O\u00a0Bethlehem of Ephrathah,
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0who are one of the little clans of\u00a0Judah,
from you shall come forth for me
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0one who is to rule in Israel,
whose origin is from of old,
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0from ancient days.
3<\/sup>\u00a0Therefore he shall give them up until the time
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0when she who is in labor has brought forth;
then the rest of his kindred shall return
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to the people of Israel.
4<\/sup>\u00a0And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the\u00a0Lord,
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0in the majesty of the name of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0his God.
And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to the ends of the earth;
5<\/sup>\u00a0and he shall be the one of peace.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cO Little Town of Bethlehem\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Bethlehem is an ancient town. The first biblical mention of the town occurs in the book of Genesis. Rachel dies in Ephrathah (Bethlehem) giving birth to her son Benjamin. (Genesis 35:16-19)<\/p>\n

It is a sad story and the tomb of Rachel is a pilgrimage spot for Christians, Jews and Muslims alike yet today.<\/p>\n

Micah proclaims the word from God that a ruler, the messiah will come from this small town which up until now has been notable only for being a historic place of grief.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom you (O little town of Bethlehem) shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Micah promises that God will raise up a great ruler from Bethlehem. This ruler will be great \u201cto the ends of the earth.\u201d<\/p>\n

What will make this ruler great? According to Micah this ruler, this messiah, this \u201canointed one\u201d will be great because he will be like a shepherd.<\/p>\n

That must have set Micah\u2019s hearers back on their heels a bit. This messiah, this great ruler, will be like a shepherd<\/em>?<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d Micah says. This messiah will be less like a warrior than a shepherd. He will feed his flock. He will provide security and seek peace.<\/p>\n

Feed people. Seek peace. That\u2019s what shepherds do. That\u2019s what we who wait for Jesus do as we seek to follow him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
