A large part of the Talmud is midrash &#8211; debating and asking questions<br \/>of the text. We preachers often use midrash in our proclamation. A seminary professor of mine, Rev. Dr. Wilda Gafney wrote a book of midrash from the standpoint of black women (pictured above).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">One biblical text that has particularly captured the interest of readers is from Genesis 22<br \/>&#8211; the binding of Isaac. We read about Abraham &#8211; how Abraham heard God call him<br \/>to sacrifice his son. But the Bible doesn&#8217;t mention the response of Sarah,<br \/>Isaac&#8217;s mother, at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Rabbi Paul Kipnes and Michelle November wrote a midrash on the text from the viewpoint of<br \/>Sarah. It&#8217;s Women&#8217;s History month, and what better time than do consider the<br \/>voices of biblical women. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Imagine Sarah at the end of her life, recounting the experience<a style=\"mso-endnote-id: edn1;\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\"><span class=\"MsoEndnoteReference\"><span style=\"mso-special-character: footnote;\"><span class=\"MsoEndnoteReference\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;\">[i]<\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><\/span><\/span><\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u201cI remember lying quietly in our tent.<br \/>Abraham had fallen asleep beside me. My mind drifted, back to my favorite<br \/>memory of the day when three guests came to tell me I\u2019d soon be pregnant. After<br \/>so many years! I actually laughed in disbelief until the Source of Life<br \/>reassured me it was true. With Isaac, God gave me one of my life\u2019s great joys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u201cSuddenly, Abraham began stirring and<br \/>called out, \u2018Hineini, Here I am.\u2019 He began to talk with God. As I often did, I<br \/>pretended to be asleep to listen in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u201cAt first what I heard made little<br \/>sense. Though I could only hear Abraham\u2019s responses, I sensed that God<br \/>requested something involving our son Isaac.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u201cAbraham\u2019s steady voice suddenly<br \/>quivered. I thought I heard him say the word, \u2018sacrifice.\u2019 Had\u00a0the Eternal<br \/>One just commanded that my husband sacrifice our only son?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u201cNow why would God, who had given us<br \/>Isaac, take this special gift from me now? And without even speaking directly<br \/>to me!\u00a0For a moment I wondered if this was my punishment for our treatment<br \/>of Hagar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u201cThrough cracked eyelids, I saw my<br \/>husband overcome with sadness. I had never seen him so sad, not even when we<br \/>were commanded,\u00a0lech l\u2019cha,\u00a0\u2018go forth,\u2019 to leave his land and his<br \/>father\u2019s house (<a href=\"https:\/\/reformjudaism.org\/learning\/torah-study\/lech-lcha\/english-translation\">Gen.<br \/>12<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u201cStrangely, I could see in Abraham\u2019s<br \/>face that he truly believed that God wanted him to sacrifice our son.\u00a0I<br \/>wanted to urge Abraham to challenge to God as he had before at Sodom and<br \/>Gomorrah (<a href=\"https:\/\/reformjudaism.org\/learning\/torah-study\/vayeira\/english-translation\">Gen.<br \/>18-19<\/a>). But Abraham\u2019s eyes burned fiercely and for the first time\u00a0he<br \/>excluded me from contemplating God\u2019s message. I felt<br \/>powerless to insert myself in what had passed between them.\u00a0Finally,<br \/>Abraham fell back asleep, though fitfully as if struggling with a demon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u201cI would give up my life before I<br \/>would let Isaac be harmed! \u2018I would not offer my first born for sacrifice\u2019. The Merciful One who had blessed us with a<br \/>child would not now take him away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u201cI needed air. I stepped outside to<br \/>think. I walked aimlessly around the camp\u2019s altar and spied Abraham\u2019s special<br \/>knife. I trembled as I thought of that knife sliding against Isaac\u2019s throat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u201cWhat was God looking for? Why would<br \/>God suddenly seek reassurance of our commitment? I remembered God\u2019s promise that<br \/>our offspring would inherit this land and become a great nation (<a href=\"https:\/\/reformjudaism.org\/learning\/torah-study\/lech-lcha\/english-translation\">Gen.<br \/>12:2<\/a>). I always assumed that Isaac and his future bride would follow in our<br \/>footsteps to lead as heads of the tribe, but I never considered just how they<br \/>would inherit our commitment to serving God.\u00a0Abraham and I were not<br \/>getting any younger. If we were to pass on the covenantal responsibility, it would<br \/>have to be soon. Perhaps God was hinting that it was time for a journey<br \/>together, to meet God on a mountaintop and begin the transition of spiritual<br \/>leadership to the next generation?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u201cMy heart began to pound as I realized<br \/>Abraham had misunderstood. God was commanding an offering to help<br \/>transmit leadership to Isaac. A sacrifice of the finest of our flocks was<br \/>called for, not a sacrifice of Isaac. I realized then, that the future of our<br \/>people depended upon me. I had to prevent a nonsensical death, and ensure our<br \/>continued covenant with God.\u00a0It was on me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u201cI hoped Abraham would figure this out<br \/>himself. But in case he did not, I had to intervene. So I went back to bed and<br \/>with my eyes closed, I planned my next step.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u201cAbraham got up early, gathered his<br \/>supplies, and took off with Isaac. He didn\u2019t even try to wake me. No<br \/>explanation; not even a kiss goodbye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u201cAs soon as they were gone, I gathered<br \/>my supplies and took our finest ram. I followed carefully, hiding in the<br \/>shadows.\u00a0At dawn on the third day, as they slept, I hurried up the<br \/>mountain, releasing the ram into the bushes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u201cThe rest happened so quickly. Abraham<br \/>was holding the knife, about to sacrifice Isaac. He seemed to be in a trance.<br \/>So in my voice that he often called \u2018angelic,\u2019 I called out, \u2018Avraham,<br \/>Avraham.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u201cThat broke the trance. Realizing what<br \/>he was about to do, he dropped the knife. He looked up, saw the ram that I<br \/>brought for him to sacrifice instead, and stepped toward it. Relieved at having<br \/>saved my son\u2019s life, and grateful at having ensured the survival of our people,<br \/>I was exhausted.
