As one author has said, poetry and history-making have become intertwined.<a href=\"#_edn1\">[i]<\/a> The tone of Ukrainian poetry during recent years has become bold and direct \u2013 reflecting the stark reality of life on the verge of attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s one such poem written by one of Ukraine\u2019s best-known poets, Serhiy Zhadan:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>[So I\u2019ll talk about it]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Written by&nbsp;Serhiy Zhadan and translated by John Hennessy and Ostap Kin<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">So I\u2019ll talk about it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">about the green eye of a demon in the colorful sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">An eye that watches from the sidelines of a child\u2019s sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">The eye of a misfit whose excitement replaces fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Everything started with music,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">with scars left by songs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">heard at fall weddings with other kids my age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">The adults who made music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Adulthood defined by this\u2014the ability to play music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">As if some new note, responsible for happiness,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">appears in the voice,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">as if this knack is innate in men:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">to be both hunter and singer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Music is the caramel breath of women,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">tobacco-scented hair of men who gloomily<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">prepare for a knife-fight with the demon<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">who has just crashed the wedding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Music beyond the cemetery wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Flowers that grow from women\u2019s pockets,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">schoolchildren who peek into the chambers of death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">The most beaten paths lead to the cemetery and water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">You hide only the most precious things in the soil\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">the weapon that ripens with wrath,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">porcelain hearts of parents that will chime<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">like the songs of a school choir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ll talk about it\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">about the wind instruments of anxiety,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">about the wedding ceremony as memorable<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">as entering Jerusalem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Set the broken psalmic rhythm of rain<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">beneath your heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Men that dance the way they quench<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">steppe-fire with their boots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Women that hold onto their men in dance<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">like they don\u2019t want to let them go to war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Eastern Ukraine, the end of the second millennium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">The world is brimming with music and fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">In the darkness flying fish and singing animals give voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, almost everyone who got married then has died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, the parents of people my age have died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, most heroes have died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">The sky unfolds, as bitter as it is in Gogol\u2019s novellas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Echoing, the singing of people who gather the harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Echoing, the music of those who cart stones from the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Echoing, it doesn\u2019t stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People of faith have long-considered poetry as prayer \u2013 an honest expression of feeling raised up to God. The book of psalms is a book of poetry that is prayer. At times it is as bold and direct as the Ukrainian poets (\u201cMy enemies surround me&nbsp;like a herd of bulls; fierce bulls of Bashan have hemmed&nbsp;me&nbsp;in!
