Our Confirmands are talking about the poetry in the Bible this week. Did you know that 30% of the Bible is poetry?
Poetry is having a moment in the United States. Or perhaps it’s more accurate to say that one particular poet is having a moment. She is the very first National Youth Poet Laureate, Amanda Gorman. https://www.theamandagorman.com/
Ms. Gorman has held a national audience as she recited her poems at both the Inauguration and the Super Bowl this year. (The word “recited” seems insufficient – she performed, enacted, embodied her poems for us.)
When Ms. Gorman shares her poems, my spirit is moved by her use of rhythm, metaphor, and syntax. I smile as I recognize a symbolic reference or hear a clever choice of words. I “see” of what she speaks. (Some call poetry, “word art.”)
Poetry can illustrate thoughts, experiences, hopes, and ideas in ways that sometimes prose cannot. When ordinary words fail us…there is poetry.
Is it any wonder that biblical writers often used poetry to speak of the things of God?
Sometimes it just takes a poem….
